Visual Control

Visual control is a tool that is commonly used in various places where information is transmitted by using visual signals as its mean of communication instead of texts or other written instructions. Its design is intentionally allowing instant recognition of the information being conveyed, in order to maximize efficiency and clarity. These signals are illustrated in various different forms, from different colored, clothing for instant, to focusing measures upon the size of the problem itself and not the size of the activity.

Benefits for implementing the use of visual controls are as followed;

  • Sort: Sort out unneeded items
  • Straighten: Have a place for everything
  • Shine: Keep the area cleaned
  • Standardize: Create rules and standard operating procedures
  • Sustain: Maintain and improve the system

Why we need ?
Visual controls provide us a new mean of communication without using any words or texts and the information can be shared without any interruptions. It helps getting everyone to work together by providing a clear understanding of what is specifically required. Visual controls contribute to the management of every process in a way that individuals alone are not able to do, by showing where discrepancies occur. As with many of the lean enterprise principles, we need to put systems in place so that things can be easily identified. This allows us to easily assess the situation across the organization and know what and when to act, when things are not under control or an appropriate response is not being undertaken.
The lean enterprise principles are being implemented across various different major industries. There are many great examples of visual controls and visual management that we can learn from and from that we can implement and adapt it to our own workshop.

An effective visual communication system can help manufacturing employees to eliminate significant waste from daily tasks. From work-zone color coding to posted metrics, visual controls clarify and simplify the path to enhanced processes and profits.
From plant layout and department setup to visual tools and parts, this book facilitates the comprehensive understanding required to initiate positive change through visual communication. The authors supply authoritative insight on how to hasten the required cultural changes, as well as step-by-step instruction for creating visual shadow boards. They also highlight time-tested methods for measuring progress and performance with improved accuracy.
